Queensland's Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove opened its doors in 1988 with much fanfare. Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston were flown in to give the grand opening celebrity status and since then it's continued to flourish.
Jules Lund took the 25-minute drive north of Surfers Paradise to see what's on offer these days and found it has been named Australia's leading golf resort twice in the past three years. The property spreads across 474 hectares and was Australia's first fully integrated gated community. It's rather like a village with private homes, marina, restaurants and shopping mall.
The Pines is Sanctuary Cove's exclusive 19-hole courses the first 18 are for fine-tuning your game, and the 19th hole is where you relax.
It's sophisticated and elegant and was inspired by the beautiful Queenslander style. The 243 rooms and suites are in beautiful surrounds and there's a half hectare saltwater beach lagoon pool. There's also a day spa for all the pampering you can take.
Jules isn't exactly a high-flyer, but he was very taken with the Manor Suite. The 231-square-metre suite is in the 1940s style of a Queensland homestead. It has three balconies overlooking gardens, fountain terraces and the marina. It has a fireplace lounge, dining for eight, the bedroom features a four-poster king bed, bath with sauna and jet spa tub.
The resort has nine floodlit tennis courts, lawn bowls and a fitness centre. Apart from The Pines, there are two other golf courses The Palms and Hope Island Golf Club. Further afield are the famous theme parks, the beaches of Surfers Paradise and the beautiful hinterland.
Choose to dine on provincial-style cuisine at The Fireplace restaurant, Cove Café or The Pool House and Verandah Bar.
