Golf, yachts and pools on Hamilton Island

10:00 AEST Thu Nov 4 2010
Hamilton has been a favourite island destination for around 30 years, and why not! It's near the Great Barrier Reef and until recently had every land and water activity imaginable. The one thing missing was a game of golf and as keen learner, Catriona Rowntree discovered that's now been taken care of.

The new 18-hole championship golf course was built along the length of neighbouring Dent Island in the sparkling Whitsundays discovered that's now been taken care of.

Whitsundays. It takes up the entire island and is a delightful five-minute ferry ride from Hamilton.

Catriona was shown around the fairways by resident golf pro and nine-year veteran of the women's pro circuit, Cherie Byrnes.

Designed by five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson, the 6120m par 71 course not only tests the proficiency of resort guests, but also challenges world professionals. It makes the most of the island's natural and rugged beauty and some holes are played across steep valleys, over lakes, trees and natural boulders.

The Chris Beckingham-designed clubhouse is perched above Passage Peak and the Coral Sea. Its relaxed restaurant and bar is perfect for a long lunch, morning or afternoon snacks and refreshing drinks. Non-golfing partners are well taken care of and relax in the stunning surroundings.

The clubhouse has a well-stocked pro shop and locker rooms with showers and toilets.

Hamilton Island Yacht Club

The golf club can't have all the glory for improvements at Hamilton Island. A Walter Barda-designed yacht club with copper roof-shaped sails has opened.

It features an indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar jutting over the marina and a members-only level with private dining area. There's an indoor lap pool, saunas, wellness facility and gymnasium and bar and reading room.

Yacht Club Villas

If you fancy a splurge, there are 35 standalone villas at the yacht club. Five are for rent, the others are privately owned. They are set over three or four levels with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The open-plan villas have gourmet kitchen, laundry, air-conditioning and a golf buggy. They have access to a landscaped lagoon pool and everything outdoors was created by celebrity landscaper Jamie Durie.
