Leeds, in the county of Yorkshire, is a bustling city, its streets are lined with shops and restaurants, clubs and bars. It is strung along the northern bank of the River Aire and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.
Once an important centre of textile manufacturing and trade, when that industry died, it became the biggest English financial centre outside London. Contemporary Leeds also has an enormous nightlife with loads of clubs with late licenses and new ones opening almost daily.
Sport is important in Yorkshire and Headingley Stadium in Leeds is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Leeds Rhinos RLFC and Leeds Carnegie RUFC. The first cricket match was played at Headingley in 1890. Across town at Elland Road is the home ground of Leeds United soccer club.
Pride of the city is the spectacular Royal Armouries on the banks of the canal. It looks remarkably like a fortress and has four floors of exhibits centred on the themes of war, tournaments, self-defence, hunting and the Orient. From Easter to October there are displays about jousting and falconry.
Harewood House is one of Britain's most beautiful stately homes. Building began in 1759 and no expense was spared. Capability Brown was responsible for the grounds and Thomas Chippendale the furniture. Artworks by Tintoretto, Titian and Bellini grace the walls. The House has been home to the Lascelles family since it was built.
