Athenæum Hotel and Apartments

18:00 AEST Thu Sep 23 2004

Catriona feels like a star as she stays at the hotel that was voted top 10 hotels in London and discovers that it’s all about location, location, location!

The Athenæum family-owned hotel has been transformed and now offers the most modern in-room technology while retaining the traditional feel of an English hotel.

It was built in 1925 as luxury apartments and originally operated like a private club called the Athenæum Court. During the war it became a hostel for air crews on leave. In 1971 it was purchased by Rank Hotels and underwent two years of refurbishment, before re-opening as the Athenæum Hotel and Apartments in 1973. It changed hands again in 1992 and underwent a ₤10 million facelift.

The property is in one of London’s best locations, on the edge of Mayfair. It overlooks Green Park and is a walk to the fashionable shopping areas of Bond Street, Knightsbridge, Piccadilly and the West End.

Its 157 rooms are made up of 111 guestrooms, 12 suites and 34 one and two-bed apartments. The apartments are a row of Edwardian townhouses adjacent to the hotel, with separate entrances but enjoying the same facilities and services. They have spacious sitting rooms and fully-equipped kitchens. A grocery shopping service is also provided.

The Athenæum Health and Fitness Spa is one of the most impressive facilities in any London hotel. It is for the exclusive and complimentary use of guests and has a 12-piece gym, jacuzzi, showers, marble steam room, sauna with relaxation area and beauty treatment room, with direct lift access from all guest floors.

Bullochs at 116 is Athenæum’s fine dining room. The interior design is light and features a conservatory roof and Jerusalem stone floor, bordered in antique mosaics, while the menu has a Mediterranean flavour.

The Windsor Lounge has a warm, friendly ambience and is a wonderful place to relax over afternoon tea.

For more serious drinking, the Malt Whisky Bar offers a selection of 157 different malt whiskies and is a favourite spot for whisky aficionados.

Each Wednesday the hotel holds a General Manager's cocktail party. Guests are invited to share champagne and canapés.
