The Gore Hotel

Thursday, July 4, 2002
Catriona shows us a hotel swamped in history and old world splendour in the heart of London.

Queen's Gate is a wide, tree-lined avenue leading from the suburb of Chelsea to Hyde Park's 80 unspoilt hectares. It houses many 19th century mansions and is close to the Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and Gardens, and Harrods at Knightsbridge. The Natural History, Victoria and Albert and Science museums are all within walking distance.

One of the magnificent Italianate mansions along the route is the expansive Gore, which has been a hotel for most of the past 100 years — excepting for the four year period it served as the Turkish Embassy.

The current owners have invested a great deal of time, effort and money to maintain the Gore's Victorian splendour and their aim was to have a property which gave the impression that the same family has been living there for generations. "Mellow" is a good word to describe the feeling.

Each of its 53 bedrooms is individually decorated with antique furniture and fittings, glowing with a patina which comes only with age.

Every wall of the hotel has a picture or print from the hotel's eclectic collection of 5000. History lives in this building with some swearing there is a resident ghost which passes into rooms through a fireplace …

Two rooms in the hotel have been the setting for many important meetings over the years. The Boardroom is on the hotel's first floor and has a richness provided by a 19th century mahogany table for 12 and large oil paintings.

The Green Room is the grand salon which has hosted people from the worlds of music, fashion and film. It is a versatile room and can be used for an album launch, photo shoot, pre- or post-theatre soirees or an informal meeting room.
