Samoa Coconut Beach

Thursday, October 12, 2006

Coconuts Beach Club is part of the traditional Samoan village of Maninoa and is the story of a dream that came true. Barry and Jennifer Rose, a Los Angeles couple, lived a life of famous clients, limousines, fancy restaurants and generally life in the fast lane. But n 1984 they decided to leave Beverly Hills and search for paradise — which they found in the South Pacific. Western Samoa to be exact.

Meetings were held with the local landowners, the Matai, but the wheels move slowly in the Pacific, and they settled for a while on Queensland's Gold Coast. Early in 1989, the lease in Western Samoa was ready for signing and by the end of the year, the Maninoa village land was ready for clearing. Imagine a pristine turquoise lagoon, never-ending white sand beach and a world away from the bustle of everyday life, and you have Coconuts Beach Club.

True Polynesian hospitality is all around — residents of surrounding villages serve as hosts and hostesses. Their seaside community has changed very little in over a hundred years.

Coconuts has three types of fales and villas — Samoa's only over-the-water fales, beach fales and Royal Beach villas. They include a complimentary mini-bar.

Over-the-water fales have one bedroom with king bed, sitting area, private bathroom and outside deck. They have thatched roofs, island décor and a glass bottom for viewing sealife.

Beach fales have one or two bedrooms plus a sitting room. Open air bathrooms have lava-rock walls and sunken bath under a waterfall.

Royal beach villas have been described by Conde Nast Traveler as the most delightful rooms in Samoa.

Coconuts has one type of suite and one type of hotel room. Garden suites are perfect for two couples or a family. They have two rooms, two open-air bathrooms and folding louver doors which can be opened for spaciousness, or closed for privacy. They have a covered terrace area and teak and bamboo furniture.

Treehouse Rooms have Polynesian décor and enormous decks with chaise lounges and hammocks. They feature two-person bathtubs which have views and are available with one king bed, or one double and one twin.

To many people, the highlight of their stay at Coconuts is the fantastic food served at Mika's. Mika — Mike Pirics before locals re-named him — has run several restaurants in Hawaii, and headed to paradise with the Roses. Many people say the food is the best in the Pacific! Décor is open-air "south seas" style in a thatched fale.
