Flying over Fiji
Thursday, September 10, 2009
is right on our doorstep, with white beaches, crystal waters and some of the world's best resorts. Jason Dundas experienced all the relaxing things the island group has to offer, but still felt an urge to try something a little different. He went from floating in a pool to floating above the islands.
Fiji is the only place in the middle of the South Pacific where you can experience the thrill of hot-air ballooning. And you have to get up early. Jason set his alarm for 4.15am, but it's well worth it as wind conditions are most suitable during the morning.
You'll be collected in style from your hotel to travel the 45 minutes to the balloon launch site which is in the mountains of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. The beautiful orchid range is thanks to the late Canadian actor, Raymond Burr. He started it in 1977, and the 20 hectares has more than 2000 different orchids.
Fiji is blessed to have a climate that consistently offers ideal ballooning conditions which are safe, comfortable and peaceful. Balloon baskets hold up to 12 people and, before you know it, you'll be wafting over the hinterland, along serene valleys, across tranquil rivers and lush tropical jungles. You truly will be glad you got out of bed so early and the memory of what you see will last forever lifetime.
Flights last for up to an hour, and once the sun is up you'll be able to comprehend how people can become hooked on ballooning. And after a gentle landing, a traditional gourmet breakfast is served.
Adrenalin's equipment exceeds all international standards for condition, quality and safety and its pilots have international flying experience and a thorough knowledge of the region.
