Sonaisali Island Resort

Thursday, September 16, 2004

Viti Levu and Vanua Levu are the two major islands in the group of 333 Fijian islands. A short distance from Viti Levu, curving to the north-west, are the 13 Mamanuca islands (not counting those covered by the Pacific at high tide!) They share pristine white sandy beaches, palms, crystal waters and cooling trade winds when needed.

The Mamanucas are volcanic outcrops which rose from the ocean floor in a massive earthquake thousands of years ago.

Just 30 minutes along sealed road from the International Airport in Nadi and two minutes across a sheltered lagoon from the mainland is the 43-hectare Sonaisali Island Resort, gateway to the Mamanuca group and some of the world’s best scuba diving.

The resort has 123 rooms — 32 beachfront hotel rooms and 91 beachfront executive, ocean-view or beachfront Fijian thatched bures set in spacious gardens. All feature spacious interiors, full bathrooms, air conditioning, ceiling fans, king or queen beds, stocked bar and television.

Sonaisali’s cuisine offers the best of Asia/Pacific, Indian and European. The alfresco Rockpool and Sunset Terrace restaurants are open all day for casual dining and the air conditioned Plantation fine dining adds another dimension to the resort’s culinary treats. The Sunset Bar and swim-up, walk-up Poolside Bar open early and close late.

As with most islands, you choose just how much you do or don’t do on Sonaisali. You can swim, enjoy day or night tennis, windsurf, catamaran, jet ski, kayak, waterski, horse ride, quad bike or just island hop, sightseeing and visiting villages and towns. It has its own PADI instructor and daily snorkelling trips, as well as game fishing, on the Malolo Barrier Reef.

There is a free Kids Club operating from 9am to 9pm with plenty of activities for those between four and 12 years of age.
