Royal Davui Island

Thursday, August 12, 2004

We have found an island that has all the ingredients for the perfect romantic holiday in the idyllic waters of Fiji.

A 40-minute flight south of Nadi is Beqa Lagoon, 282 square kilometres of crystal water protected by 32km of unbroken reef. Here are more than 100 dive sites within a 20-minute boat ride. Visibility is over 37 metres, currents are very mild and water temperature remains at around 28°C. It's another world swimming amongst colourful coral, fish, eels and sponges.

Beqa Lagoon is steeped in local legend. Beqa Island is recognised as the birthplace of fire walking in Fiji. An ancient spirit gave local people the power to walk barefoot unharmed over white-hot stones. It is an amazing spectacle.

Royal Davui Island is a 3.3-hectare lush island with secluded white sand beaches. It is surrounded by a barrier reef, with schools of fish, rays and the occasional turtle. The area has been declared a marine sanctuary.

On land, the endangered Fijian banded iguana is part of a rehabilitation plan. The island is also home to the rare kadavu parrot and Pacific frigate.

Royal Davui has just 16 open-plan villas, blending Fijian and Pacific architecture, modern décor and thatched roofs, all creating a paradise of world-class luxury.

Villas are staggered for maximum privacy and views, with private sun deck, dining deck, infinity edge plunge pool, living room with wet bar, bedroom with king bed, bathroom with double shower and jacuzzi, double vanity, separate toilet, climate control in the bedroom and ceiling fans. Each consists of two buildings connected by a covered foyer.

As all villas have spa facilities, guests can enjoy an array of treatments in their own space. Fully-trained therapists perform sugar rubs and massages with body butter.

Set beneath the canopy of a banyan tree is Vale Levu, a beautiful al fresco area for dining. Local seafood and organic fruit and vegetables from Beqa Island are specialties. Dining is casual. Shorts, tees and sarongs are suitable for daytime wear, though people tend to dress a little more formally for dinner. But it is not essential to wear shoes!

For something different, a table will be set up just for you in a secluded area and in-room service is available.

There are two hobicats for sunset sailing, six kayaks, bush hiking on Beqa Island and picnic baskets available to take on outings. They even supply walkie talkies so you can remain in contact.
