Vatulele Island Resort

Thursday, December 22, 2005

After producing thousands of hours of film and television, Henry Crawford, of the Australian TV pioneering family, was very keen to venture into tourism and searched for months to find the perfect location. He and his business partner settled on a large clump of jungle and Vatulele Island Resort was born in 1990. Fortune magazine declared it #2 Barefoot Resort in the world. They opened The Point in mid-2002.

People go there to escape the Western world, mix with locals and enjoy a unique experience. Henry has made it a media-free and shoe-free place. No television, newspapers and rooms are phone-free, so stresses of the outside world stay there.

The 18 bures are a combination of Santa Fe and Pacific island. Each has a large living room, king size bed and open plan bathroom.

The Point has a massive living room with Italian décor, private terraces with never-ending views and the biggest possible king size bedroom upstairs. It is air conditioned and has a swimming pool and plunge pool. Now that's luxury.

The resort has a communal feel and people mostly choose to join other guests at dinner. However, that is purely a personal choice.

Food ranges from Californian to Thai, Japanese, Austral/Asian and Indian. Whatever is not available locally arrives fresh each day from Australia and New Zealand. Of course there is an emphasis on seafood and the resort has a wine cellar of first-class vintages to accompany all meals. Champagne flows endlessly.

When the moon is full a 'dining room' is set up on the water's edge. Because of the gentle climate, most meals are taken on a terrace outside the central pavilion which overlooks the lagoon. At night the atmosphere is sultry and romantic with stars and candlelight and soft lanterns completing the scene.

Vatulele Island is 8km long and 4km wide and around 1000 native Fijians live in its four villages.

25-minute flight south of Nadi.

Flight Centre has four night packages to Vatulele including return airfares twin share accommodation in a standard bure, all meals and beverages starting from $4016 per person plus tax.

Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
