There's nothing standard about The Standard, Downtown LA in Los Angeles. We visited its West Hollywood counterpart a few years ago and just had to ask Jules Lund to check out the Downtown LA property.
It's quirky to say the least and as they describe themselves, "very tongue in chic". Rooms are categorised as Medium, Large, Double Standard, X-Large, Huge, Gigantic, Humongous, Wow!, Big Penthouse and Bigger Penthouse.
They all have mood lighting, scented candles, giant mirrors and treat-filled mini bars. A most unusual plus is that windows actually open. Rooms are retro-mod with platform beds, formica and chrome furnishings, bright orange built-in wardrobes and extra-large bathtubs.
The grand lobby with mezzanine has a rich aesthetic. Design features include a 38m fuchsia Omnibus Vladimir Kagan sofa, billiards table, photo strip booth, barber shop, Alexander Calder-inspired mobile and art installation by Jenny Holzer. It's offset against a '50s-era architectural theme. There's an unusual stainless-steel encased clock with 15 time zones, and DJs spin as guests are served cocktails and meals from a light menu.
Despite it being hip and trendy, staff is very welcoming and you'll feel at home in no time.
André Balazs, the very smart hotelier who once dated Uma Thurman and owns a string of fabulous properties in Los Angeles, New York and Miami, just seems to know which buttons to push. The site of The Standard, Downtown LA was once occupied by dreary old buildings and the area became deserted soon after 5pm. These days, at about 8pm LA's beautiful young things fill the streets to join the cool scene at the hotel.
