Broadway is a mecca for actors from every part of the globe. Hopefuls by the million have come here over the years, searching for stardom. Not many have their dreams come true.
To see just how difficult it can be, the Getaway team joined an Adventurous Wench tour. Actress for a Day is part of a three-day Showbiz tour. The long weekend tour includes Broadway and off-Broadway shows, behind-the-scenes tours of stage and television and a walking tour taking in movie locations.
Day one begins by scanning Variety, looking for roles. You meet your audition coach, who helps you add just the right emotion as you go through your lines.
Lunch at Sardi's is a highlight of the tour. In the heart of New York's theatre district, Sardi's has been the toast of Broadway for more than 82 years. The walls are lined with caricatures of theatre legends who have dined there. It is the place for stars and star-gazers.
Michael Watson gives acting classes. He has extensive Broadway and off-Broadway experience under his belt, having performed in The Secret Garden, Stardust, On Your Toes, A Chorus Line, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and the revival of Picnic. His classes are long and difficult and those who have the slightest chance of success soon come to the fore. Pursuing an acting career certainly isn't for the fainthearted!
