The Grant Aspen

Aspen … the ultimate for all ski lovers, ski bunnies, après skiers and snow fans. This is the Rocky Mountains at its whitest.

Aspen has a big reputation for a small town. It covers just four blocks, but has fantastic skiing. There are four mountains — Ajax, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass, each with something different to offer and all accessible with one pass.

Aspen is at the mountain’s base, but at 2422 metres is still very high. The mountain peak is 3481 metres, so altitude sickness can strike. Take it easy, particularly with coffee and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. There is a bar dispensing pure oxygen with four fragrances, including eucalyptus and lavender.

It’s true Aspen attracts the glitterati who have, or pretend to have, loads of money, but the rest of us can also enjoy a mid-range holiday here. There are condos to share with a group of friends, plenty of places selling inexpensive meals, free shuttle buses, happy hours for cocktails and second-hand designer clothing.

The Gant is more like a fine private home than a hotel. Each one, two, three or four-bedroom condo has a wood-burning fireplace, private balcony, fully-equipped kitchen, daily housekeeping and many little touches. There are two heated pools, three hot tubs, two saunas, an exercise facility and five tennis courts for use in summer.

The Hotel Jerome has 91 spacious guest rooms and suites individually decorated and offering a heated outdoor pool and two jacuzzis. They serve award-winning cuisine in the Century Room and Jacob’s Corner and there are two bars for après-ski drinks.

There’s shopping aplenty in Aspen. All the local and international up-market labels and designs are featured. Don’t despair — there are some vintage clothing stores, such as Gracy’s, where Australian expat Alex Potter steered Catriona into a “must have” bargain or two. Gracy’s is a consignment story with a lot of pizzazz selling art, antiques, designer clothes and loved treasures.

In between shopping, eating and the odd cocktail, there was time for skiing. Catriona decided to brush up on her skills. Her instructor was Sam von Trapp, grandson of the family made famous in The Sound of Music.

Aspen has a lot to offer — 300 days of sunshine each year and more than a hundred bars and restaurants to choose from, plus excellent snow for all levels of skiing.
