Whistler in winter

Thursday, September 13, 2007

Whistler has the largest ski area and the longest ski season in North America. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains sit side by side and between them have more than 300 hectares of skiable terrain and more than 200 runs.

Every season, thousands of Australians descend on Whistler to work and play in one of the most liveable ski communities in the world. There are 17 restaurants to choose from and a Fresh Tracks Breakfast Pass for about $20 lets you eat early and be one of the first people to enjoy the morning powder.

Organisers really make it easy — there is a free village shuttle running from 8am to midnight each day. At 11.30 each morning there are complimentary tours — a great way to get your bearings. The Wave is the area's public transport — buses have ski and bicycle racks and run through the village and various neighbourhoods.

Whistler Visitor Information Centre has a welcome kit with loads of information, discounts and restaurant vouchers. Pique Newsmagazine will tell you what's going on in town and where the entertainment is.

Longhorn Saloon at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain Gondolas has been the number one apres ski spot in town for over 25 years. You're assured of great food from the grill, ice cold draught beer and a DJ spinning party tunes — the perfect way to end a day on the mountain or golf course.

The HI-Whistler hostel is the perfect retreat in winter or summer. On Alta Lake, the rustic lodge is at nature's door and just 10 minutes from Whistler Village. After a day on the slopes, warm up in the hostel's sauna or relax by the fireplace. In summer, take advantage of great mountain biking, hiking and river rafting. It has free canoes, private swimming area and even an ice hockey field.

If you fancy being one of the 7500 Australians granted working visas for Canada each year, log on to and see if you fit the bill.
