The 22,000 square kilometre Kluane National Park and Reserve in the Yukon was established in 1972. It has the country's highest mountain, Mount Logan (5959 metres) in the St Elias Mountains. Mountains and glaciers dominate the park which is home to more than 100 species of bird.
It is a place of soaring mountains, unconquered peaks, vast icefields and lush valleys with a wide variety of plants and wildlife. Visitors are treated to seeing Dall's sheep, grizzly bears, moose, lynx, wolves and wolverines, golden and bald eagles, ptarmigans, magpies, arctic terns and peregrine falcons.
It has the world's largest non-polar icefields, and valley glaciers include the Donjek, Lowell and Kaskawulsh. Many great rivers and their tributaries flow from these icefields.
There are three basic life zones in the park the grasslands in the low areas and valleys, the mountain forest zone of white spruce, aspen and poplar and the sub-alpine where trees are stunted and gnarled.
Flora such as arctic poppies, purple saxifrage, mountain heather and moss provide beauty and colour. The park is a wilderness area with no roads and practically no trails offers camping, hiking and backpacking. Hikers must register at park headquarters in Haines Junction.
Fishing is prohibited within the park boundaries, but Kluane Lake has excellent fishing.
Commercial guides offer fixed-wing or helicopter tours over the icy heart of Kluane and its majestic peaks, and it's an experience you'll never forget. Aircraft are permitted to land in designated areas in support of mountaineers or backcountry expeditions. You can arrange tours through Adventure Destinations before you leave home.
