Tauranga in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty is a beautiful and lively ocean harbour city with a long, white, sandy beach stretching from Mount Maunganui to Papamoa. The climate is sub-tropical and it is one of the country's sunniest cities.

Historic buildings and sites associated with the city's time as an early mission station and military base can be visited at the historic village. The region is a major producer of citrus and other fruit crops and Te Puke is New Zealand's major kiwifruit growing area.

It is home to New Zealand's most important export harbour and is one of the country's fastest growing places. The popular retirement area's lifestyle runs at its own pace and in summer months, holidaymakers flock there.

With a population of around 100,000 it is the western Bay of Plenty's major city and is protected by Matakana Island. Tauranga is a Maori word which is roughly translated to "a sheltered anchorage".

Water activities abound — game fishing, white water rafting, windsurfing, parasailing, kayaking, swimming with dolphins and body surfing are there to enjoy. There are many good walking tracks, excellent restaurants, places to party and hot saltwater pools for relaxation.

Cruise ships often visit and hundreds of yachts are berthed at two large marinas. Charter boats take keen anglers and scuba divers out for adventures and there are lots of learn to surf schools operating.

Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort is the only real beachfront accommodation in the area. It's in the right spot for surfing, fishing, strolling along the beach and waking to the sound of waves. Day-trips to nearby Matakana and Mayor Islands are great things to do.
