The Lodge at Tikana

Thursday, September 25, 2008
Southland is New Zealand's southernmost province. It spans the breadth of the South Island and has ever-changing backdrops that can have you wondering if you are in the same country, let alone the same province. What a place to get away from it all — no queues, no traffic jams; just beauty and peace.

Within just one day you will see towering rainforests, alpine tussocks, rolling fertile farmlands and golden beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. It's as though you are in a dozen places at once.

Particularly for tourists from large cities, the open spaces of Southland are amazing. There is one person to every 30 hectares of land allowing lots of room for serenity and solitude. While easily accessible, it is promoted as being off the beaten track while offering activities, attractions, world-class fare and excellent accommodation.

The Lodge at Tikana is in the heart of Southland, in Browns near Winton, close to Queenstown and Te Anau. It is part of a working farm and was built as a place to provide guests with the comforts of an exclusive hotel, without other people. When you stay there, the lodge is yours, and yours alone. Bookings for couples are recommended by the owners, but of course, if you wish to share with friends or family, that's your choice.

The lodge has a super-king-sized bed and a double bathroom. Heated flooring ensures you are never cold, and rustic wood beside polished rimu gives the feeling of cosiness and space.

Environmentally friendly straw-bale construction takes away sharp lines, and curves add to the warm feeling. Recycled timber, raw timber, stone and steel have been used throughout. Artworks of local artists have also been used.

If you've been out all day taking in the sights, Tikana is a wonderful place to return to. A crackling log fire, latte from the espresso machine or a glass of fine wine from the cellar, a nibble of something from the well-stocked refrigerator, some background music or a DVD all make for one of the most relaxing and pleasurable breaks.

A personalised menu is discussed with you each day and you choose the time you wish to dine. The choice is wide — Southland prime lamb, beef and venison or delicious seafood are in the offing, cooked with organic vegetables and herbs from the property's garden. Accompanied by the best New Zealand beer and wine, it's a true epicurean delight.

Activities include visiting the Wapiti deer stud, farm and bush walks, lawn tennis, swimming in the outdoor spa pool and spa treatments.
