Rotorua is on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty region. It is famous for its geothermal activity, geysers, hot mud pools and Buried Village. It's all close to the city and popular with locals and tourists.
Also named Sulphur City, Rotorua has a unique and pungent odour, particularly in the central east Te Ngae area, because of thermal activity.
Seventeen lakes in the area offer a bounty of activities fishing, waterskiing, swimming and boating. The lakes are also used as take-off and landing points for float planes.
Known as a spa town and major tourist resort since the 1800s, Rotorua has interesting historic architecture and beautiful botanical gardens.
Whakarewarewa Forest has been described as "the Disneyland of mountain biking" and has the trails to back up the reputation.
For something totally different, Off Road NZ can take you on a pulse-racing adventure. They provide entertainment for adrenaline junkies and vehicle enthusiasts in a fast, fun and safe way. It was the first ultimate 4WD adventure of its kind in New Zealand.
After a comprehensive safety briefing, you pair up in one of their vehicles and share the driving as you negotiate the challenging trail running through native rainforest. You steer your way through a tunnel, negotiate a waterfall and drive the luge.
It’s exhilarating and there are plenty of intimidating tasks along the way. But you will have CB radios and heaters, and while the vehicles get dirty, you stay clean!
