Matakana, New Zealand

Thursday, November 29, 2007

Matakana is a small town north of Auckland surrounded by a beautiful landscape and a stunning coastline. If you get the chance to stop and spend some time there, you will be rewarded in some delightful ways.

To get the feel of the town and its people, a visit to the Matakana Village Market is a good place to start. It opens every Saturday at 8am and offers fresh organic and conventional fruit and produce, pickles and chutneys, cheeses, eggs, breads, pastries and even organic wines. Stall-holders and their produce are quite sophisticated, and there is live music to help enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

The Morris and James Pottery and Tile Works is famous for vibrant coloured glazes. It is the largest pottery factory in the southern hemisphere and has been operating for over 30 years. Potters use clay deposited by the Matakana River and they are rewarded with a distinctive look, renowned throughout New Zealand for quality, colour and innovative design.

Lunch or coffee is served in the courtyard café while you decide just which pieces of pottery to take home with you.

Takatu Vineyard and Lodge in Matakana is luxury accommodation set in a working vineyard. There are four suites, each with private terrace. Architecture is contemporary, and beautiful wood, stone and marble have been used throughout.

Walls entirely of glass allow all-day sun and a chance to appreciate the stunning views — the vineyard, mountain ranges and sea. High-vaulted macrocarpa ceilings, open log fires inside and out, a cosy library and outside landscaped rooms are features which add pleasure to your stay.

Takatu Vineyard has the ideal north-facing aspect above the Matakana Village. Each vine is hand-tended with care and the harvest is hand-picked. The end product is distributed to a range of top restaurants.

An hour north of Auckland.

Takatu Vineyard and Lodge has suites starting at around $410 a double a night. A three-course breakfast is included. Wine tasting for guests is complimentary. The cellar door is open by appointment between 10am-4pm on weekdays. Tasting prices are around $8.50 a glass.

Air New Zealand has flights to Auckland.

Prices quoted valid at November 29, 2007.

I came here. I thought it was nice. A bit trashy with the rubbish. But nice. Japan.
