Rally fly and drive

Thursday, November 1, 2007

Heletranz is owned and operated by Tony and Julie Monk, highly respected and well-known for high operational standards, flying skill and professionalism. They have a fantastic range of experiences, not all giving an adrenalin rush, but the tour the Getaway team went on certainly tested their mettle.

The experience began in Auckland with a leisurely 25-minute flight past the north shore beaches, over Waitemata Harbour, past the green of the city border, the Hunua Ranges on to Maramarua Forest.

They went to Rally Drive NZ headquarters to try the five kilometre rally loop through dense forest on a winding gravel track where you can get up to around 120km/h — if your professional co-driver has confidence in your ability.

The first 1.5km is all pine tree forest and then you climb another 1.5km to the top of the ridge and follow it back down through hills and gullies with lots of twists and turns.

Rally Drive NZ was formed in 2000 by Dale Perry. It is the leading rally school facility in the southern hemisphere and Dale's 20 years behind the wheel is comforting. Concentration is the key and when he takes you on a hot lap, you enjoy the ride and learn from him. Even at over 160km/h, he can still talk and pass on his knowledge!
