Hall Pass stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis traded witty banter when Getaway sat them down for a chat about travel, Blackberry vibrations and where to get a stash of hash...
What is your number-one vacation spot and why?
Jason: Usually where there is beach and water. I went to Turks and Caicos last spring and that was great.
Owen: Yeah that's great. I just went skiing up near around Whistler, southern Canada. That's beautiful up there. Of course Australia has lots of [beauty], you know, you'd love Australia if that's your definition. You know, Sydney, you know, Gold Coast, all along there. Beautiful. I've never been to the other side of Australia where there's Perth, and those places ... I live in Hawaii so that's a great place that people go for vacation and of course our president is from there.
Jason: Yeah, I don't know if that's true.
Owen: It isn't? ... Yeah I think they're saying he is Muslim isn't he?
Jason: Pretty sure, pretty sure.
Do you have a number-one travel tip?
Owen: A number-one travel tip? I think that for me, it's not checking bags. I think that's easier for guys.
Jason: I was going to say pack light.
Owen: But that's definitely good one.
Jason: And know someone locally that can get you pot.
Owen: Yeah, yeah.
Jason: Make a connection... makes craziness.
Owen: You wouldn't happen to know anyone, because you're from Australia right?
Jason: On our honeymoon we went to Maui and I didn't know where to find it.
Jason: And so when we asked a guy at a bar he said, "Are you coming into my club to ask where to get drugs." And it felt like a whole scene out of Hall Pass and like my wife was like, "No, no."
Owen: It's just pot.
Jason: He must have been just trying to give me a hard time.
Owen: Well they've basically legalised in New York and California?
Jason: New York not yet. New Jersey is.
Owen: It almost got ... it was on ...
What is the one thing you never leave home without when you travel?
Jason: A lawyer's phone number for extracurricular purposes.
Owen: Unfortunately, unlike the changes, is the BlackBerry, the mobile phone. I sometimes think that we do come over as slaves but, that's the true full answer. Do you ever leave home without your phone?
Jason: No and it feels weird when I don't.
Owen: It feels really strange and sometimes you make a decision like, I'm going to leave this here and I'm going to go.
Jason: And then my hand will go by my pocket and I won't feel it. Or, I'll still get like a phantom vibration. You have that? The phone won't be in my pocket and I'll feel it and be like, "Oh, oh it's not." So I don't know what that is. I don't know if it means an angel got its wings or maybe an angel got its wings ripped off. Every time a phone vibrates an angel loses its wings.
What was the best thing about making Hall Pass?
Owen: The best thing for me was, you know, just kind of being around Jason and the Farrellys [directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly] and becoming friends with everybody. And it's going to sound a little bit corny, but we were all saying like, "Gosh, I wish we were all starting again." Just because it did seem … I've made a lot of movies, and the spirit kind on the set, it was just like, I felt very unusual.
Jason: Yeah, definitely the people without a doubt. All the friends I got to make and just the, you know, we laughed a lot. It couldn't have come at a better time. Yeah, the people.
What's the one thing you want people to know about this movie?
Owen: When we were in Atlanta there was a freak net.
Jason: Yeah a freak net.
Owen: Freak net and you'll just have to look it up. So that's kind of a wild weekend planned.
