Scenic Tours of South America: Part three

17:30 AEST Sat Jun 22 2013

Catriona and her fellow-passengers have lapped up the sights, food and luxury of their Scenic Tours 'Icons of South America' journey so far and the final leg is greeted with much excitement and enthusiasm by all.

The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the Iguazú Falls had all lived up to expectations and now it is time for Buenos Aires in Argentina and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Buenos Aires is South America's most visited city and known as "Paris of South America". The capital of Argentina, it is on the western shore of the estuary of the Rio de la Plata. The cosmopolitan city has a population of over 13.5 million earning it a place in the 20 largest cities in the world. It is the most important global city and competitive marketplace of Latin America.

The first day starts with a tour of city highlights, including the colourful neighbourhood of La Boca, home of a large Italian community. The old port saw the entry of millions of immigrants fleeing Europe to settle in the New World. Many were from the Italian city of Genoa and they have imprinted a strong European flavour. The 20th century boom included La Boca being the birth place of the Argentine tango and Argentine pizza.
