Piz Gloria

Thursday, September 21, 2006

Jungfrau, German for 'virgin', is the highest peak of a mountain massif of the same name. It is in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps, overlooking Grindelwald. The other peaks are Eiger and Mönch.

Mürren is a traditional mountain village. At 1650 metres it is not reachable by public road. Transportation is instead provided by four cable cars, which take you on the longest ride in Switzerland with spectacular views of the three mountains. The village has a school and two churches.

On the Schilthorn near Mürren is Piz Gloria, the world’s highest revolving restaurant. The aerial station and restaurant were built by a Bernese architect, Konrad Wolf. Construction units were prefabricated. The outer skin of the all-round glass upper floor is aluminium-designed wooden plates. The turning mechanism has a 12-metre core and it takes almost an hour to complete one rotation.

Piz Gloria was enlarged in the 1990s, but its 1960s character has been retained. It was used as a location by author Ian Fleming for the James Bond novel On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Blofeld's hideout in the novel certainly brought notoriety to Piz Gloria.

The 400-seat restaurant is not inexpensive, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing to do. The restaurant's 360° views take in the three big mountains, along the Bernese Alps to Mont-Blanc and as far as Germany's Black Forest. You will see over two-hundred mountain peaks and countless glaciers and lakes.

You can start the day with a Bond champagne breakfast, or enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner. And of course, they serve a mean martini — shaken, not stirred.

Whenever you choose to dine at Piz Gloria, you can be assured of the best views.
