St Christopher's Village Backpacker

Thursday, February 26, 2009
"Good cheap accommodation" and "London" just don't seem to go together, but Dermott Brereton has found not one but three to choose from, all wonderfully close to Central London. They are within three minutes of each other, but each has differences.

St Christopher's Hostels provide safe, clean accommodation, not just in London, but across Europe. In London there are The Orient Espresso, The Inn and The Village, each with everything the backpacker needs. The Village is the flagship, and that's the one Dermott checked out and he's given it the nod.

The Village has free wi-fi and linen, towel hire and breakfast, DVDs and lockers are all included. The Village was awarded Best Budget Accommodation in London for both 2008 and 2009 by the Visit London Gold Awards. The Village is located in Southwark, London's oldest neighbourhood and now a trendy place, indeed.

Just over the Thames from the centre of London, you can walk to so many attractions. The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, The London Dungeon, St Paul's Cathedral, The Tate Modern Gallery, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, London Eye and Borough Market. The market is London's oldest food market — it's been there since the Romans built the first London bridge and it sells fresh produce at good prices. You can even buy kangaroo and crocodile meat and chances are you will see Jamie Oliver shopping there.

A 45-minute stroll takes you to the Parliament Buildings, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and South Bank which has plenty of pubs, bars and restaurants for all palates and budgets.

The Village has a late-licence nightclub, early morning cafe, cinema, sauna and rooftop hot tub. There is also a chill-out room with satellite television and library — good places to meet other travellers and share handy tips. The neighbourhood Belushi's Bar is handy to pop in for a pint and a dance.

It was so great to change the channel and see the familiar Belushi's bar! That's the bar at St Christopher's Village. I wish I'd managed to catch the whole thing, but it's definitely a great spot to go if you want to have fun - stay at the Village for partying, the Inn for a bit of both and the Orient Express for a quiet night. Yay! So great to see where I spent a year of my life!
