Positano

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

Positano in Italy's Campania region is a small seaside resort town on the Amalfi Coast. The breathtakingly beautiful place is at the southern foot of Monti Lattari (Milkmen Mountains) which protect it from northerly winds.

Its dry, mild climate, surrounding green mountains and small archipelago of three islets of Gallo Iungo, the Rotonda and Castelluccio make it a very desirable playground for the rich and famous.

Buildings seem to be stacked on top of one another as they climb from the tiny crescent bay towards precipitous cliffs. Painted in pastel primrose, pink, terracotta, peach and white, the town looks quite theatrical. During the summer season there is a profusion of colourful flowers spilling over every balcony and terrace — it's no wonder Positano is called The Pearl of the Amalfi Coast. To put the icing on the cake, you can hire a Ferrari with driver who will navigate the hairpin bends while you relax and enjoy the sumptuous scenery.

The Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie movie Mr & Mrs Smith was filmed in Positano and it certainly worked its romantic magic on them!

If you fancy some shopping, the town is famous for beach and casual wear, beach accessories and colourful clothing suitable for all occasions. Bright and intricately patterned pottery, cookware and ceramic tiles are also widely available.

Le Sirenuse is one of southern Italy's greatest resort hotels. Despite stiff competition, the sixty-two room hotel blends comfort and five-star luxury. It opened in 1951 when the Sersale family turned their summer house into a hotel of eight rooms and a large terrace with stunning views across to the Islands of the Sirens.

Rooms are full of light and decorated with antique and contemporary furniture, complemented with whitewashed walls. Floors are covered with colourful Vietri tiles. Most rooms have a balcony or terrace overlooking the azure sea. Suites are in the original house and can have one or two bedrooms. They feature vaulted ceilings, antique furniture, handmade tiles and walls are adorned with old masters and watercolours.

La Sponda Restaurant is full of bougainvillea and hundreds of candles and in summer months meals are served al fresco. The Champagne Bar is on a terrace and drinks and appetisers are served until 1am. The pool café serves snacks, salads and sandwiches.

The Aveda Concept Spa offers treatments, sauna, steam bath, bio-sauna and gymnasium.
