Hamster hotel hijinks in France

Thursday, October 7, 2010
If you ever needed proof that the French aren't always reserved and know how to have fun, all you need to do is drive five hours from Paris to the town of Nantes. Natalie Gruzlewski did just that and couldn't believe her eyes.

Frederick Tabary and Yann Falquerho have fulfilled the dreams of those of us who always wanted to experience the life of a hamster. Yep — a hamster.

They have converted an 18 square metre room in an 18th-century building into a human-sized hamster cage, complete with running wheel and hay to sleep on.

They wanted to create something "really funny". A place where you could sleep and be comfortable but have a different experience. The decision to become an animal for a night morphed into becoming a hamster and now it's a reality.

It's snug — just large enough for two adults — but fits a double haystack bed reached by a ladder, and of course, the floor is covered with sawdust. To get you into character they provide hamster hats. What more could you want?

When guests aren't hoeing into their organic grain and sipping from a water tube, they have a good work-out on the 2m-wide hamster wheel. It's large enough to fit two people at once.

To assure everyone it's not just a play area for a laugh, they have a kitchen area, shower and wi-fi making it perfect for longer stays.
