A hidden gem
Home to friendly stingrays
Thursday, August 11, 2005
Just 30km south of Margaret River, Hamelin Bay is a hidden gem. The wide sandy bay with a rocky headland has clean, clear waters offering safe swimming, beach fishing, snorkelling, wreck and cave diving and boating year round. The beautiful white beach stretches around the bay and is sprinkled with beautiful shady old peppermint trees. Some people just walk and beachcomb the long beach or take the Leeuwin Walk Trail.
Hamelin Bay is home to friendly stingrays which are huge in size and number and love to swim with snorkellers and congregate around the boat ramp for fishermen's scraps. If you stand ankle deep in the water they swim across your feet.
Dekked Out Adventures offer a range of activities on land and water. They have recreational tours and a team-building program, various sea kayaking tours and exploration of limestone overhangs, grottos and sea caves. Sometimes you might be lucky enough to interact with dolphins. Also on offer are mountain bike and abseiling adventures.
In the Hamelin Bay area, Dekked Out have half and full-day tours from the jetty of the once bustling port. The original jetty was 549 metres long and was used for loading local karri during the 1800s. Access to the harbour was very difficult (shipwrecks are testament to this), hence the length of the jetty. All that remains today are a few poles, but the area is very popular for fishing and swimming.
Mid-winter 1900 was a time of violent storms and caused five ships to be wrecked. The anchor of the Norwegian barque Lovspring can be seen at the boat ramp. Other relics and reminders, including the graves of four sailors who lost their lives, tell the tale of how difficult life must have been.
3.5 hours drive south of Perth.
Dekked Out Adventures dolphin, seal and stingray kayaking tours start at $35 per person. Full-day tours are $90. They run from October to May, weather permitting.
Please note that the prices listed are valid at the time of filming.
