Fremantle by scooter

11:30 AEST Thu Jul 29 2010
Fremantle, known as Western Australia's 'other capital', was established in 1829 as a port for the young Swan River colony. For much of its history it was Western Australia's major city.

It was Australia's first port of call for many migrants and still has a rich mixture of cultures and nationalities. It remains the state's major commercial port for imports and exports.

Fremantle has some wonderful examples of mid-Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The find old buildings are well preserved and many galleries, restaurants, shops and offices are resident.

The popular tourist town attracts people from at home and abroad, all enjoying the lively yet relaxed lifestyle. Having said that, because of its popularity, it can be difficult to find a parking spot in Fremantle, and Scoot Freo can help you out there.

With one of their scooters you can cruise the coastline, follow the river and pull in for refreshments on the cappuccino strip or maybe get yourself some fish and chips to go.

The 50cc scooters are easy to drive as there are no gears to change. Just twist the handle and you're on your way.

You may feel like visiting Off The Wall. Right at the mouth of the cappuccino strip, the store whips you to northern Europe as you explore their vintage, furniture and lifestyle stock.

It attracts a diverse crowd going there to shop, hang out, listen to music or just to meet other people. You're likely to come across pottery collectors, lovers of vintage clothing and the local skateboarders. Everyone is welcome to enjoy and appreciate the style of Off The Wall.

Fly by Night is a not-for-profit community musicians' club and music venue, founded in 1986 by musicians and music lovers. It has a history of local and international musicians, actors, comedians and circus performers who have shown their talents on the Fly's stage.

Some of Western Australia's best known bands have seen their beginnings there — John Butler Trio, the Waifs, Eskimo Joe, The Flairz and The Panics are just some of those.

There is always a great line-up, so if you're heading to Fremantle, check their website.

Across the park from the beautiful Hotel Esplanade is Little Creatures Brewery. They brew beer on the premises and drained from huge vats right before your eyes as you enjoy delicious food while overlooking the harbour.

They brew pale ale, Little Creatures pilsner, Roger's beer and bright ale.

Fremantle about 20 minutes south of Perth.
