Getaway reporter David Reyne had the honour of being the first guest to check in at the new Holiday Inn Burswood in Perth Perth's first purpose-built hotel in more than twelve years. The 291 guest rooms cover a wide choice and are equipped to international standards.
An outdoor terrace has pool and gymnasium and a high technology Business Centre and three meeting rooms mean a holiday can be combined without the workload building up back in the office.
Sirocco offers indoor and outdoor dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Simone Bajin is Chef de Cuisine and her career began with the Disney Corporation. She then went on to work as private chef for the Serbian Royal family in Belgrade. She specialises in exotic cuisine.
There is 24-hour access to Burswood Casino which has a nightclub, bars, non-stop entertainment and a restaurant for every occasion.
The casino has three areas and the biggest bet is $300,000. With the new poker craze sweeping the world, a poker parlour has been set up.
Next door is Burswood Golf Course. It is on the site of Western Australia's first golf course, formed in 1895. Right on the banks of the river, it gives uninterrupted city views. The par three eleventh hole is called Alcatraz as it has no escape and claims the scalps of many golfers. It is on a semi-island, almost surrounded by water. A local scuba diver makes a living out of retrieving balls from the water holes around the course estimated to be many thousands each year.
Perth, capital of Western Australia.
Holiday Inn Burswood rooms start at $161 a night.
