Emperor's Crown

Cheap and cheerful Perth

Thursday, May 19, 2005

A wonderful way to get a good feel for the west's largest city is to hop on a Perth tram. Operating since 1986, the award-winning wooden replicas resemble the first trams which operated here in 1899. They offer a charming way to explore the city — drivers give informative commentary as you pass through Hay Street, past the Burswood Casino and to Kings Park.

Catriona decided to visit Annalakshmi restaurant on the banks of the Swan River with its 360˚ views of the city skyline, park and river. Annalakshmi is the Hindu goddess of food and the restaurant named after her is wholly-owned by the non-profit Temple of Fine Arts. Instead of asking for donations to support hospitals locally and internationally, they give food in return for money. There is no set price for their delicious meals — people pay what they wish. They believe hunger should not exist and that feeling is shared by volunteers from all walks of life who perform, wash up, prepare food and clean.

For a cultural experience of a totally different sort, visit the Art Gallery of Western Australia for indigenous art, works by some of Western Australia's finest painters as well as international exhibits. Interactive tours are run with a difference. There is talk between guide and participants — no rights or wrongs, just interesting points of view, questions and answers.

Emperor's Crown offers affordable, spacious and comfortable accommodation just 200 metres from Perth's main railway station, CBD, Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and Northbridge, famous for its entertainment, arts and nightlife.

The Emperor has 19 guest units, with seven deluxe ensuite rooms, air-conditioning and heating. There is a television lounge, modern kitchen and gas barbecues. Café Crown 85 opens at 7am for breakfast and lunch is also served. They will arrange for breakfast baskets to be delivered to your room.

Just 15 minutes west of Perth is Cottesloe, a superb beach with terraced lawns, Norfolk pines and Indian Ocean outlook. Amberjacks is an old fashioned seafood shop with an open kitchen, offering seating inside or out with views across the ocean to Rottnest Island.

The Monkey Bar in Perth's West End has three levels with DJs making the music, cocktail lounge with views, plus the Warehouse indoor wine bar, while Amplifier has live and loud music and the Magnet Bar is for smaller, quieter get-togethers. Go to Monkey Bar on Thursdays for a free salsa or merengue lesson with Danza Loca. Danza Loca run similar sessions at other venues across Perth.
