Until the mid 1980s, Broome was accessible only by a dirt road. It is on a narrow peninsula surrounded by the Indian Ocean and Roebuck Bay. It is known as a world-class migratory bird stopover and its sunsets are stunning.
Broome grew out of the discovery of the world's largest pearl shell. It was like a gold rush, but the industry slumped the mid-20th century. Many people stayed because of the laid-back atmosphere and natural beauty of the area. Today, the town has a mix of colonial architecture, old mission houses, churches, pearling huts and more recent housing.
Accommodation is varied and we sent a crew to have a look at one of the latest resorts to open in Broome Rendezvous. Set in a lagoon oasis, the ocean is at the front door and the Kimberley area at the back.
It is a short walk from the sands of Cable Beach and a five-minute drive from Chinatown. It features modern and elegant design, which borrows from traditional Broome architecture and colours. With 167 rooms, there is a choice of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments and three-bedroom villas and sanctuaries. All apartments have a covered courtyard or balcony. Much attention has been paid to lighting and lamplight gives visitors a warm welcome.
Pindan Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and chef Kevin Rhind pleases diners with his approach to modern Australian cuisine. His dishes range from Asian favourites to fresh local seafood, Australian beef and fresh farm produce.
