Melbourne Pet Hotel

Thursday, August 11, 2005

It can be heartbreaking packing up the holiday gear for the family's annual break and having to leave behind the cat or dog. They seem to know everyone is going away to have fun — but there's no reason for them to miss out if you live in Victoria.

Elcho Park Pet Hotel is in Lara, around an hour's drive from Melbourne. They care for dogs and cats of any size and age in safe, clean accommodation and even offer a chauffeur-driven valet service to pick up your pet from home or Avalon Airport.

Even the most pampered pooch and puss are impressed by their accommodation and the nutritious food they are served during their stay.

All kennels have a covered area and dogs are protected from the weather. The climate-controlled conservatory is for small, medium and senior visitors and grassed exercise runs have toys and other stimulation. Bedding is comfortable, there are large family pens if you have two or more dogs and play times for those who enjoy other canine company.

Cats are accommodated in a solid brick building, warm in winter and cool in summer. Multi-level walk-in suites are totally secure, air controlled, comfortable and stocked with toys. Heating pads are available on request, and the cats have views of the rose garden or fernery. Extra large suites are suitable for those cats who like to play outside and they have use of a purpose-built sun patio. There are interconnecting rooms for cat families.

A watchful eye is kept on your pets with video monitoring and there is a veterinarian on 24-hour call.

If you have missed them so much while you are away, you could pop into The Paws Store pet boutique in Williamstown, just 15 minutes from Melbourne.

It has a range of comfortable beds for your pampered pet, a wide range of collars, leads and harnesses, great food and water bowls, carrier packs and even lifejackets for the pooches who love to jump off the family boat.

It also offers grooming and spa facilities, fragrances and some rather glamorous tags, clothing and other accessories. They have a tempting range of delectable treats for the most discerning pet.

There are Pet Makeover days, which include relaxation massage, "peticure" and fashion photo shoot.

Doga (yoga for dogs) classes are a combination of relaxation, meditation and breathing. Treatments relieve anxiety and create a sense of well-being and calm in the pets. A qualified therapeutic animal masseuse demonstrates several way of maintaining balance and harmony for your pet pooch.

Not all of our four-legged friends are fortunate enough to be pampered and the Lost Dogs Home is always in need of blankets and towels to keep strays warm and dry. There is a collection bin at The Paws Store and they arrange a weekly delivery.
