Fountain Terrace St Kilda

Thursday, October 21, 2004

St Kilda has hotels, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, street cafes, entertainment venues, markets and retail outlets. In Acland and Fitzroy Streets you will find an endless choice of cuisine and the CBD is around 15 minutes away.

Quiet, plane-tree-lined Mary Street, St Kilda has been voted one of the city’s best streets and here you will find the delightful, freestanding Fountain Terrace. Built in 1880 as a gentleman’s residence, it has been carefully restored from a dishevelled state by its owners, Penny and Heikki Minkkien. Its interiors are luxurious and the warmth of a traditional boutique hotel offers a welcome alternative to large city hotels.

Each of Fountain Terrace’s seven rooms has ensuite facilities and each has been designer decorated and named after an important Australian — Dame Nellie Melba, Henry Lawson, Caroline Chisholm, Dorothea Mackellar, Norman Lindsay, Edna Walling and Sir Sidney Nolan. Large sash windows allow natural light to enter and during summer, bay breezes waft through sheer curtains. All rooms have television, tea and coffee-making facilities, refrigerator, heat lamps, air-conditioning and disabled access is available.

Guests enjoy an indulgent breakfast at a refectory table in the drawing room. The room is also used for small meetings or cocktail parties. Several desks and writing tables can be found in other parts of the building and the upstairs landing has comfortable armchairs, desk and coffee table where you can sit with other guests in the afternoon sun. Or you can enjoy the courtyard with its water feature, citrus trees in large glazed pots, barbecue and a long Tuscan table.

Fountain Terrace is close to the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit, Luna Park, Palais theatre and Port Phillip Bay’s sandy beaches. Within an hour you can be in the beautiful Yarra Valley wine region, Mornington Peninsula, the Dandenongs or Geelong.

St Kilda, an inner bayside suburb of Melbourne.
