University of Melbourne Accommodation

Thursday, April 11, 2002
Melbourne never looked so good with cool accommodation at amazing prices.

Here's your chance to go to university. If you are always on the lookout for somewhere inexpensive, clean and centrally located when you are in Melbourne, the university is the answer.

There are three colleges to choose from and all are close to tram stops and are an easy walk to Lygon Street, Melbourne's Italian area - which is full of restaurants, cafes, gelatarias, the best coffee and people enjoying the good things of life.

Facilities vary from college to college - some welcome children, some have ensuites, some have full board with others offering just breakfast or no food at all. Some can only accommodate singles, but others have double, twin or family rooms.

To decide which is best for you, it is a good idea to call the Intercollegiate Office for advice.

Ormond College is a beautiful, historic building, set in wonderful gardens and has a grand dining hall in the Oxbridge style. Its original wing was built in the 1880s and has a tower and quadrangle. Its other two building are more modern, roughly octagonal and one is a series of linked towers.

Tennis and squash courts are available for guests, but the music rooms and library are not. Guests have a bedroom, shared bathroom, laundry and a common room which has newspapers, tea and coffee. Breakfast is included in the tariff.

International House is on 1.6ha of beautiful grounds and has several music rooms and a common room with piano which guests may use.

There are also tennis, basketball and squash courts, laundry facilities and snack machines.

They offer full board or breakfast only, and there is a good range of accommodation - a single student room, single room with ensuite, double guest room with ensuite, and one and two bedroom self-contained apartments. They have television, phones, Internet access and are serviced daily.

Medley Hall is made up of a wonderful 1890 Italianate mansion, two terrace houses and a 1960s block. There is a music room with baby grand piano, common room with television and newspapers, games room with pool and table tennis and a courtyard with barbecue facilities.

Bathrooms, laundry facilities and kitchenettes are on each floor and are shared. The main heritage building has a curved marble staircase, tessellated tiles and stained glass windows. Continental breakfast is served when there are sufficient guests in-house.

Medley Hall is probably best suited to those who don't have to worry about car parking. The entire area is metered until 5.30pm, so it can become a bit of a hassle.
