Prince Hotel

Friday, January 18, 2002
David discovers an art deco delight in the heart of St Kilda; it's sheik, swanky and chic, and has to be seen to be believed!

The Prince Hotel, an elegant art deco building, has been a St Kilda institution for more than 50 years. Updating the 40-room hotel was a challenge. The locals, who always visited the Prince's bars, are still there mingling with the trendy crowd who now flock to St Kilda for its restaurants, cafes, coffee bars — and beautiful views of Port Phillip Bay. After its renovation, The Prince was voted one of the Top 100 Hotels in the world by Conde Nast Traveller magazine.

The hotel's rooms have natural light and are furnished with an eclectic blend of furniture, lighting and objects. Top quality DVDs, televisions and radios provide excellent audio-visual entertainment, and the beautiful bathrooms have the added luxury of Australian botanical hair and body products. The walls bear original artworks and the mini-bars include Campari and Louis Roederer champagne. Waffle weave robes are there to relax in, and all rooms have a security safe. The rock band U2 and singer Sting have stayed at The Prince - and loved it.

Circa, the hotel restaurant, has been described as an art deco theatrical extravaganza. Walls are draped with black organza and gentle light filters through woven cane. The cocktail bar is sleek, and the restaurant's white leather banquettes overlook the bay. To complement all the surrounding splendour, the food is excellent and beautifully served.

The smaller restaurant, Circ, is open for breakfast and lunch and is popular with hotel guests and locals alike.

If you fancy a taste of elegant decadence, the velvet-curtained booths and leather couches of the hotel's bar, Mink, are perfect for you. This ultra chic bar has a rare range of Cuban cigars and a freezer cabinet holding 43 varieties of vodka! These can be enjoyed with a Russian inspired menu, including caviar.

If all this high living has taken its toll, Aurora is there to save you. Australia's largest spa retreat is a holistic urban retreat that offers water therapies, skin and body care.

The peaceful sanctuary has soothing aromas, warm natural light and gentle music to calm and relax you. Robes and slippers are supplied to enjoy after a yoga or personal training session or while enjoying a fresh fruit or vegetable juice. Spoil yourself to a day at Aurora, or buy gift vouchers for friends.
