Okay, here's the scoop on budget hotels in Melbourne: clean, comfortable, secure, good location, friendly and most importantly — they're affordable!
The Richmond Hill Hotel, a Victorian heritage building, is 10 minutes by tram from the CBD and 10 minutes walk to the Botanical Gardens and MCG. Double rooms have a television, refrigerator, tea-and-coffee-making facilities and some have a balcony. Breakfast is included in the tariff.
The Victoria Hotel is on Little Collins Street, right near Melbourne's Town Hall, shops and theatres. Cheaper rooms have shared bathroom facilities, but include their own television, refrigerator and tea-and-coffee-making facilities. The more expensive rooms have all of these things, plus an ensuite bathroom.
The Hotel Tolarno was built in 1864 and renovated three years ago. It's in the heart of St Kilda's cappuccino strip and the beach is a two-minute stroll away. Double rooms include a bathroom and kitchenette.
The Plough Hotel is in Footscray, close to Flemington Racecourse. It is over 100 years old and was recently renovated. The ensuite rooms are large and their cafe won an award in 1998. Breakfast is included in the tariff.
