Goulburn is surrounded by rolling hills dotted with gum trees, farmland and wildlife. One of the nation's earliest inland settlements, it is at the confluence of the Mulwaree and Wollondilly Rivers.
Just 25 kilometres out of Goulburn, you will find Eric Stevenson of Armoured Vehicle Adventures. He has 121 hectares just waiting for anyone who ever wanted to drive a tank. (They also have a tank in Canberra if that is easier for you.) A qualified driver/instructor stays with the vehicle, but really, you are the one to call the shots.
The vehicles in Goulburn are an FV 603 Saracen Armoured Personnel Carrier and an FV432 Armoured Personnel Carrier. Both seat nine to 10 passengers.
Jules chose the FV603 Saracen. Built in 1964, it will travel at 80km/h through the roughest terrain.
The tanks were used by England, Northern Ireland, South Africa and Israel and now they are purely for fun.
They can be driven by anyone whose feet reach the pedals. If you stay on the property, you don't need a licence, but if you leave the property, one of the company's licence holders needs to be the driver.
The southern tablelands of New South Wales.
Armoured Vehicle Adventures' FV603 Saracen Armoured Personnel Carrier costs $449 an hour for up to 10 people. The FV432 Tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier is $499 an hour.
Prices quoted are correct on November 9, 2006.
