Khyat's Hotel in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton has a vine-covered exterior, warmth and charm and not a poker machine in sight. Since 1863 it has been a family business with friendly service.
It's a great spot for a drink. There are six English beers on top at the mahogany bar and locals love the Wilson Street Bar in winter as it has a huge open fire. The Terrace Room leads to a courtyard and there is a Pool Room. Food is a step up from traditional pub bistro food, so it's pretty much like being in an English Pub.
Darren Hilsley is the bingo organiser at Khyat's and while there is a format, spontaneous changes can happen. The format goes like this:
6.30pm Music plays while Bogan Daz and Macca hand out bingo tickets and explain how the night is going to go (or should go).
7pm Bingo rules are explained and a round of Bogan Bingo's calls is gone through.
7.15pm Eyes down. First game.
Entertainment features Macca playing air guitar among the crowd and the Bogan Bingo is resumed, usually in the form of Bogan Blingo.
Melbourne's beachside suburb of Brighton.
Bogan Bingo is played at Khyat's Hotel in Brighton on Wednesday nights and at the Elwood Hotel on Thursdays. It costs $5 a game and all money goes to charity.
