Bindley House B&B

Thursday, July 13, 2006

It is claimed, though not all agree, that Kilmore is Victoria's oldest inland town. It has become a satellite of Melbourne, and its population has doubled to 3500 over 20 years.

The first Europeans in the area were explorers Hamilton Hume and William Hovell in 1824. They gave Mt Disappointment its name. Settlement commenced in 1837 with the potential of successful agriculture in the rich volcanic soil. It was a stronghold for early Celtic settlers from Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall and there is a strong Celtic feeling there today with a festival held each June.

In the 1850s goldrush, Kilmore became a conduit for supply between Melbourne and the northern goldfields. That secured Kilmore's future.

The town has many historic bluestone buildings and antique shops to entice tourists. Mount Macedon and the Famous Hanging Rock region are just a short drive away.

Bindley House, owned by Jan and Neville Bewsell, is an 1862 manor set in superb gardens. It has two modern studio apartments — the elegant Victorian Suite and Elm Tree Cottage, which offers country ambience. Both have wood fires, queen beds, electric blankets, ensuite facilities with double spa and aromatherapy products. Quality linen, soft woollen doonas, fluffy towels and bathrobes have been used throughout.

Each has television, VCR, DVD and CD facilities, air conditioning, kitchen, microwave and dining area with bay windows overlooking grand old elms. There is a barbecue area and gourmet breakfast provisions are supplied with seven days' notice. Thoughtful touches of fresh flowers, gourmet delicacies, magazines and books await guests' arrival.

Guests can enjoy dinner by an open fire in Brindley House's formal dining room, and are welcome to relax in the lounge room. Both have French doors opening to a huge verandah, which overlooks the rose garden.

Private massage by a qualified masseur in the privacy of your suite can be arranged. Bindley House owners will pack a picnic hamper for you to take on a day outing — maybe to local wineries or a trip to Victoria's famous spa country. They also offer a good range of attractive packages.
