Shadows in the Vineyards is a private and exclusive way to visit some of Australia's finest wineries. Visitors are chauffeured through the beautiful Yarra Valley in a magnificent 1973 Silver Shadow Rolls Royce.
Classic Rolls Royce owns some of the best maintained and restored Silver Shadows in Australia, and the owner of the car used in our story is a senior member of the Rolls Royce Owners' Club. The service offered appeals to those who love a touch of luxury and romance. They even roll out the red carpets when you arrive at each destination!
The winemakers visited on Shadows in the Vineyard tours dedicate their time to tour participants and give them a personalised, behind-the-scenes demonstration of their craft. They offer tastings straight from the barrel, a walk through the vines, lunch and the chance to enjoy a range of superior wines.
Morgan's Vineyard is a new winery in the Warburton Ranges in the southern part of the Yarra Valley. The region has seven wineries and is emerging as one of the most exciting in terms of cool climate viticulture in Australia.
The vineyard was planted with cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir in the early 1970s. Planting of more pinot followed in 1989, merlot and cabernet sauvignon in 1991 and chardonnay in 1995.
All wines produced are from grapes grown on the property, picked by hand and bottled by the owners. Traditional French winemaking techniques are followed throughout the process and the highest quality oak barrels are used. Minimal amounts of chemicals are used and the wines are almost unfiltered.
Morgans is a family-run business Roger is winemaker and vineyard manager, his wife Ally runs the marketing and demonstration side of the operation and they are enthusiastically supported by their five children and three Labradors. Their cellar door is nestled amongst 30 year old vines, all surrounded by rolling hills.
Five Oaks Vineyard was established in 1978. Canadian couple Judy and Wally Zuk bought it in 1995 and the property has a North American feel in its buildings and trees.
They specialise in cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet sauvignon-merlot and Riesling wines with an emphasis on handcrafted quality, rather than quantity. They produce up to 2000 cases a year.
The vineyard is in lush green hills on the southern side of the valley, overlooking cherry and stone fruit orchards with Mt Dandenong in the background. The five magnificent oaks complete the scene.
The Zuks serve Shadows of the Valley Tour guests a wonderful three-course lunch, all prepared from local delicacies, and enjoyed with their award-winning wines. If the weather is right, lunch is served by the old oaks.
All Shadows of the Valley customers are returned to their accommodation and presented with a delightful hamper of delectable local goodies.
To uphold local integrity, wines labelled Yarra Valley must consist of at least 85 percent Yarra Valley fruit.
Harvest commences in early to mid-March with pinot noir and ends in early May with cabernet sauvignon picking.
