Mt Buffalo Hang Gliding

Thursday, November 23, 2000
The entire area of Mount Buffalo is a national park and this granite mountain is ideal for rock climbing, abseiling, mountaineering, microlighting and, most importantly, hang-gliding.

The entire area of Mount Buffalo is a national park and this granite mountain is ideal for rock climbing, abseiling, mountaineering, microlighting and hang gliding.

The Eagle School of Hang Gliding started in 1988 and has trained more than 1000 people to pilot standard in both activities. Stephen and Lisa Ruffels, who own the school, have 25 years of flying experience between them and delight in taking people on the experience of a lifetime in this safe environment.

Microlights are powered hang gliders and are factory made to standards set by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. A 15 minute flight over the pretty town of Bright is a good way to discover how to control the glider under instruction. At the end of the flight at a height of about 900 metres the engine will be switched off for a silent glide back to the airstrip.

You might choose to go to 1800 metres over Mount Buffalo gorge and waterfall, also finishing with an engine-off glide back to Porepunkah airfield. If you go for the Grand Tour you will fly over both Bright and Mount Buffalo and have 30 minutes of full instruction.

If you want the company of a friend you can try a twin instructional flight, flying side by side. The last flight of the day is over Mount Buffalo at sunset, something wonderful to see.

If after your instructional flight you find the bug has bitten you and you want to broaden your skills, Stephen and Lisa will tell you about their training programs. They have gift vouchers if you would like a friend to enjoy the experience.
