Ragged Edge 4×4

Thursday, August 13, 2009
After doing some reasonably tame stories for Getaway in the boroughs of New York recently, Jules Lund was ready for some rough and tumble. And there is nowhere better for that than at Ragged Edge 4×4, where adrenaline pumping experiences in monster tough trucks are on offer. It's the only business of its kind in the world and if you fancy that sort of excitement, you just need to go to Mt Cottrell, 30 minutes from Melbourne.

Forty-five minute introduction packages start with you driving the Razorback Track before an instructor takes you for a "hot lap" through the hair-raising Chuckie's Revenge. See how the pros do it before you are back in the driver's seat to drive Hell-Dorado.

Competition packages are 80 minutes long and are for those with a competitive streak. After driving Razorback and surviving a hot lap through Chuckie's Revenge, you are ready to do the driving through Hell-Dorado and Chuckie's Revenge. If you make it through Chuckie's without hitting a gate or rolling the four-wheel drive you would be one of the very few.

Two-and-a-half hour Masters Drives are all about precision and skill. One-on-one instruction teaches you how to get the four-wheel drive in and out of the most impossible positions. You actually challenge rules of physics as you work around the courses. It's mentally exhausting, adrenaline pumping and a total rush.

The 112cm Swamper tyres used on the vehicles give great grip — they hang on and give you the traction you need to stay on track.

To the layman they are known as tough trucks but for the rev-head they are 320 Chevy V8s, with 300 horsepower! When you see the pros behind the wheels of these monsters, you realise anything can happen. But the experience is not about battling the clock. Rather, it's about completing the course without ending up with the wheels in the air.

Jules was at odds to describe the experience — it was unlike anything he had ever experienced and he loved every minute of it.

Passengers ride free. They are open on Fridays from noon to 6pm and on weekends between 9am and 6pm. You need a current driver's licence. P-plates are acceptable. Bookings are essential.
