Jasper Hotel, Melbourne

Thursday, October 30, 2008
Melbourne's Jasper Hotel — formerly the Y Hotel — has been redeveloped and now has a new contemporary look.

The 65 rooms in the boutique hotel are made up of twins, queen, king and two-room suites. It has a guest laundry and valet service and an entirely smoke-free environment.

Each of the eight levels of the hotel is painted with varying colours of the jasper gemstone.

Adjoining the hotel foyer, Jasper's Kitchen offers fresh and healthy food and beverages from 6.30am each day.

Guests have complimentary access to a nearby health gym, pool, spa and sauna.

Public transport is at the door and the shopping of Melbourne is easily reached.

Jasper Hotel is about 100m from the famous 125-year-old Queen Victoria Market. The largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere is spread over seven hectares with around 1000 traders offering a wide assortment of goods.

Starting as a small market in 1857 selling fruit and vegetables, the market has grown to become a Melbourne institution. The Deli Hall, a glass-roofed Art Deco hall, was built in 1927.

It opens every day except Monday and Wednesday, and night markets operate between November and February. The refrigerator in your room comes in handy if you stock up on fine food and wine.
