Oakford on the pier

Thursday, April 10, 2003
In the heart of historic Hobart, right on the river with views all around … be prepared for an award-winning stay!

Oakford on the Pier is part of the international Ascott Group, Asia Pacific's largest serviced-residence company. The group has built its excellent reputation on fulfilling the needs of people who live and work away from home. Their 8000 rooms in 20 cities in 11 countries offer luxury and elegance.

Oakford on the Pier in Hobart is in a 1930s building which has been restored to award-winning quality. The Elizabeth Street finger pier means the hotel has water on three sides and underneath it and also has excellent views of the Derwent River.

There are 56 apartments, either one-bedroom, spa or family studios, some with private balconies. The apartments have loft-style bedrooms to maximise space and all have water views of the river or harbour. From some there are views of Mount Wellington.

Everything the traveller might need has been thought of: kitchens with microwave, refrigerator, hotplates, crockery and cutlery make eating-in a simple chore. There is good disabled access and guest parking.

For those who prefer to eat out, the pier has a variety of restaurants and bars. The location is perfect for exploring everything Hobart has to offer.

Battery Point is the city's most historic suburb and nearby Salamanca Place has terrific entertainment and turns into a marketplace on weekends.

Fitzroy Gardens is a tranquil place filled with roses, rhododendrons, copper beeches, elms, oaks and plane trees. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is 13 hectares of cool climate exotic and native plants. The Queensland of Tasmania is on the edge of the city and its rose garden has more than 40 named rose varieties. The Queen's Domain has belonged to the people since 1860 and is home to eastern rosellas, grey-breasted silvereye and yellow wattle bird. Aboriginal middens have been found there giving evidence of habitation long before the first colonists arrived in 1803.

The Museum and Art Gallery is in the 1808 Commissariat store which was originally used to issue supplies. It now has a section on Aboriginal tribes, relics of colonial heritage and art objects.
