Freycinet wine

Thursday, July 7, 2005

Tasmania's Freycinet Peninsula is covered by the Freycinet National Park, which continues to Schouten Island. It has magnificent beaches and vast amounts of wildlife and wildflowers.

Coles Bay, at its entrance, has extraordinary 300 metre-high pink granite outcrops and the Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve, home to black swans and wild ducks.

The park has wonderful walks, ranging from short routes to a 27-kilometre walk. One not to miss is the three-hour trek to Wineglass Bay.

DeeTours DownUnder Vino Ventures will take you off the beaten track on palate-pleasing tours, ranging from half-day to two or more nights. They run from Hobart, Launceston or your local accommodation and include visits to Tasmania's major wine regions — Freycinet Coast, Tamar, Coal River, Derwent and Huon Valleys and the increasingly popular Tasman Trail.

At Freycinet Marine Farm you can feast on Tasmanian blue mussels and two types of oysters — Pacific and Angasi. The plump Pacific variety has a delicate brine flavour and is rich and creamy. The Angasi is large and flat and similar in flavour to the famed French Belon oyster.

Just 10 kilometres from the village of Coles Bay, Freycinet Marine Farm has a two-bedroom, fully-equipped cottage for rent. It is on the edge of the Moulting Lagoon Game Reserve, so you are guaranteed peace and quiet — and as many oysters as you can eat.

Craigie Knowe is a small vineyard in Cranbrook. Local dentist and bon vivant John Austwick's planting in 1979 and his cabernet have become legendary. He also produces a little pinot noir.

Coombend is another small vineyard, owned by John Fenn-Smith. Known for its superb cabernet sauvignon, it also produces excellent riesling and sauvignon blanc. The vineyard is supplemented by 3000 olive trees, producing award-winning oils.

The winery has a cellar door and vineyard cottage accommodation.
