Catriona is in Tassie on a gourmet lover’s tour to the vineyards ... but this one is by boat!
The beautiful Tamar River flows 58km through vineyard country, orchards, pastureland and forests from Launceston to the sea. Its quiet waters are navigable for its entire length, with sheltered shores providing the perfect eco-environment for many species of waterbirds.
Fifteen minutes north-west of Launceston is the village of Rosevears, named after William Rosevear, who was granted 256ha in 1829 and a further 172ha in 1839. He used the land for fruit growing and other agriculture.
Today the Tamar Valley is Tasmania's prime wine-growing area, with a sprinkling of small and family-owned vineyards along the river. Most are open to visitors, with cellar-door sampling and sales of these cool-climate wines.
In summer you can pick your own farm-fresh raspberries, blueberries and stone fruits and enjoy the quality restaurants and cafes throughout the valley.
Rosevears Estate Vineyard Apartments are self-contained and serviced daily and all have views of the Tamar. The 16 apartments will all be available this month and those already completed have been well received.
Their style is minimalist, with clean lines of furniture and huge glass windows unhindered by dressings, so occupants can enjoy the vineyard and river views. Choose between one, two-bedroom or family units.
Rosevears is eco-friendly and all water is recycled for use in the olive groves.
Rosevears Restaurant is already renowned in Launceston for its excellent food, wine and ambience.
