Cradle Mountain Trail Ride

Thursday, September 21, 2000
The Cradle Mountain trail ride starts at Cradle Mountain Lodge and winds through a spectacular moss-covered forest.

Errol Whatley has been operating trail rides for 26 years, and for the last 13 years, his Central Highlands Trail Rides have run through Cradle Mountain.

The tours start at Cradle Mountain Lodge and go out through a spectacular moss covered myrtle forest. The myrtles, sassafras and celery top pines in the cool temperate rainforest have closer links to the woodlands of New Zealand and South America than they do to mainland Australia.

After about 30 minutes you reach Speeler (also known as Fury) Plains. Once there you can gallop or canter the 8 kilometre stretch to your heart’s content.

The 1 hour tour turns back to the Lodge here, and it is generally quite enough for beginners. For experienced riders, the 2 hour tour continues to the top of the plains, where the mountain views are spectacular.

The Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is about two hours from Launceston.

A one hour ride costs $44 and a 2 hour ride is $77 per person. All gear is included. Tours run every day of the year and bookings are essential.
