Strahan, on Tasmania's west coast, is a small town on Long Bay at the northern end of Macquarie Harbour. It was developed as a port of access for mining settlements, and was a vital location for the timber industry. For most of the 19th century and the early 20th century, it was a port for regular shipping of passengers and cargo.
It makes the perfect headquarters for those wishing to explore the wild and beautiful World Heritage Area. It is also a central point for the Gordon River, the 40km Great Roaring Ocean Beach, King River Gorge and the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
Piners and Miners take guided day tours for up to eight guests out of Strahan Village. You travel aboard a Land Rover Defender Hi-Rail, a 4WD vehicle converted into a rail car. Even though the start is an early one, you are given a hamper of delicious breakfast provisions to enjoy as you take in the natural beauty of the rainforest through a glass roof.
From Lynchford, the Hi-Rail retracts its rail wheels and your vehicle transforms into a 4WD for the drive to the Bird River Track, taking in views of Frenchman's Cap and Lake Burbury from the Mt Jukes Road, before descending to follow Kelly Basin and Bird River Roads to the start of the abandoned Bird River railway.
Walk through the superb Tasmanian rainforest bordering the quiet reaches of the Bird River down to Kelly Basin, on the shores of Macquarie Harbour, site of the old copper mining port of Pillinger.
Enjoy a picnic lunch of Tasmania's finest food and wine, with seafood plucked that morning from Macquarie Harbour's icy depths. Then you may enjoy one of many activities including heritage walks, nature study, photography and wildlife observations. At the end of the day you return to Strahan aboard the luxury cruise boat, Second Nature.
It is essential to wear hiking boots or boots with adequate ankle support to get you safely across undulating terrain.
Tasmania's mid-west coast.
Piners & Miners Experience is $275 per person. Guide, Hi Rail Journey, return via luxury cruiser, breakfast and gourmet barbecue lunch are included.
