Peppermint Bay Cruise

Thursday, June 10, 2004
Catriona cruises Tassie’s gourmet trail stopping off along the way.

Hobart Cruises have half-day adventures from Hobart's Brooke Street pier down the D'Entrecasteaux Channel to Woodbridge, which was once known as Peppermint Bay because of the peppermint gum timber harvested in the region.

Travel in a luxurious catamaran, enjoy sublime scenery and be treated to delicious cuisine. The area is rich in marine life — dolphins, seabirds, seals, penguins and occasionally whales.

The vessel pulls up alongside a commercial salmon farm where underwater cameras transmit footage of pens to the onboard flatscreen televisions.

Continue to Green and Snake Islands to see bird colonies, then south to Woodbridge, where the Yacht Chase is a cascading water feature where children. can race foam yachts, which are provided.

The Peppermint Bay Complex has an a la carte dining area, The Dining Room, and The Local Bar & Terrace. Both have wonderful views and menus crammed with the best quality seasonal foods, plus daily specials, which could include locally-grown quinces and salmon smoked on the premises. There is a 40-metre trellised herb garden and a holding pond for the kitchen's fish and shellfish stock.

The Local has a blackboard menu. Here you can enjoy coffee, cake or boutique beer and local wine. It opens for lunch every day and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.

The Dining Room has cathedral ceilings framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, with views of Bruny Island and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. During winter months it is open for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday and for dinner on Saturdays.

The Farm Cheesery is Australia's only organic sheep cheesery. Enjoy a cheese platter, glass of wine or fine coffee on the deck overlooking the Grandview Vineyard and talk to the cheesemakers, as well as meeting "the girls", as the sheep are fondly known.

An optional tour of the cheesery includes a picnic lunch and tour. It is just 10 minutes from Peppermint Bay.

40km from Hobart to Woodbridge.

Hobart Cruises to Woodbridge cost $75 per person. That includes return catamaran and a two-course a-la-carte lunch in The Dining Room or a casual meal in The Local and an excursion to the Farm Cheesery. They operate from Wednesday to Sunday until September and daily from October until April.
Grandvewe Farm Cheeses tours are $25 per person, including picnic lunch, tour and a chat with the cheesemakers. Open for sales and tastings from 10am each day. .
