Battery Point

Jarem Guesthouse

Thursday, July 18, 2002
We invite you to return to a 19th century mariners' village with a unique advantage point!

Battery Point is Hobart's most historic suburb. Just a short walk from Salamanca Place and the waterfront via Kelly's Steps, Battery Point retains the character of a 19th century Cornish fishing village. Its name comes from the gun battery which stood on the promontory by the guardhouse.

In colonial times it was a colourful maritime village, home to master mariners, shipwrights, sailors, fishermen, coopers and merchants.

Annette and John McIntosh opened Jarem six years ago, and its waterfront location attracts visitors from near and far. The elegant building is on the water's edge and has views of the Derwent River. It began life as a block of family apartments and the McIntoshs have renovated and slowly expanded the building.

The light and airy guest accommodation is centrally heated, and each room has ensuite, television, phone and hairdryer. There is an honour system mini bar on each level.

Breakfast is served silver service style in a main dining room and the McIntoshs pride themselves on the quality and variety presented. It is a great draw card for return visitors.

Many buildings in Battery Point have been classified by the National Trust, and through them, Saturday morning walking tours can be arranged. You can visit tea rooms, pubs, antique shops and the 1836 St George's Anglican Church which has prime position on top of a hill.

Salamanca Place is a row of beautiful sandstone warehouses on the harbourfront and is a delightful example of Australian colonial architecture. In the whaling days of the 1830s it was the centre of Hobart Town's trade and commerce. Now it has been beautifully developed into galleries, nightspots and a huge variety of shops and eating places. An open-air market is a big event each Saturday.
